Own your 40s

Your 40s can be a busy, expensive, but also powerful decade. Your time is likely to be taken up with your commitments to work, family or many other areas, and retirement may feel a lifetime away – but what you do in your 40s can make all the difference to your future.

Your early 40s, mid-40s and late 40s, all have their own financial milestones and savings moves.

Early 40s: Take stock and create your goals

Start by gathering all your financial information – your savings, your debts, your mortgage term, your different pension schemes, so you know where you stand. Maybe it’s more than you thought, or maybe you have some catching up to do, but you have time on your side.

Now, sketch out the lifestyle you’d like later in life. How much income would you need for it?

Other early-40s examples:

  • Could you redirect money freed up from childcare costs into your savings?
  • Can you make mortgage overpayments to shorten your term?
  • Are your life insurance and income protection policies where they need to be?

Mid-40s: Time to build momentum

By your mid-40s, you might be advancing in your career, building your business, or considering a change. This is when it pays to focus on your finances

If you haven’t checked in on your pension for a while, it’s time to book that review – with yourself or with a professional. Are you contributing enough and how is your money invested?

When pay rises or bonuses come your way, could you boost your pension contributions? Every extra euro you invest today still has years to multiply.

Late 40s: Fine-tuning and future-proofing

By your late 40s, retirement starts to come into sharper focus. This is when to refine your plans and make sure you’re on track.

Review your savings, debts, investments and pensions – including any old pots from past jobs. Check your state pension record for gaps you may be able to fill in.

Picture your retirement: do you stay, move or downsize your property? Is your retirement plan to stop work at 65, shift to part-time, or go self-employed? Or do you have target date or pension pot in mind?

The 40s advantage

Your 40s are the decade when small, steady actions will really build. There's still plenty of time for your savings to grow and your plans to evolve, but the sooner you start, the easier this gets.

Each step, from reviewing your pensions, to fine-tuning your investments, or paying down that mortgage, will move you closer to your retirement of your dreams.
